Congradulations to Aria Komene and Matariki Black for their efforts in the Ngā Manu Kōrero Regional Competition held at Queen Elizabeth College for the Manawatū/Horowhenua regions. Aria placed 1st in the Sir Turi Carroll Junior English section and Matariki placed 1st in the Korimako Senior English section.

High Performance Sport Update

MANUKURA Sport continues to keep us all busy. A number of players have just returned from New Zealand Touch Nationals with high levels of success, the Waka Ama and Softball Teams are preparing for Regional and National events and all school sport sessions have commenced with conditioning and team practices ensuring our students are well prepared for the opportunities ahead.

Important to remember that our 2020 students selected their priority sports codes at the end of 2020. This was to ensure we were able to maximise their time on task and prepare them physically for their respective focus codes at a high performance level.

In general most students have a summer sport and a winter sport. Students selected for their priority sport will all be involved in team trials commencing over the next months to determine which teams they will play in. Priority selection for teams will be given to those players who qualify through testing and have selected their code as a number 1 focus.

Several students are attempting to play two winter codes and this will be a challenge at a performance level to manage well. Communication for clarity will be key. In addition the fitness testing standards continue to challenge students to reach benchmark targets to enhance performance outcomes.

Congratulations to Arama Kite and Sheldon Tairea-Rapana who have been selected for the New Zealand U18 Schools Rugby League team to play agains the New Zealand U18 Clubs team.

NZRL Schools and NZRL Clubs teams are set to face each other in the inaugural NZRL Schools v Clubs match on November 8th at Mt Smart Stadium.

The NZRL Schools v Clubs match is the first of its kind and will act as a key development pathway for New Zealand U18 players. For 2020, the New Zealand Schools team comprises of identified players from the Auckland Rugby League Secondary Schools competition as well as those registered in full-time study.

The New Zealand Schools team will assemble on Thursday the 5th of November in Auckland, with a short camp ahead of their fixture against New Zealand Clubs team on Sunday the 8th November.

Symonn Wallacehoskin

Symonn has been competing in Martial Art Competitions since the age of 7, winning National and Oceania titles in Kenpo Karate from a young age. She achieved a Black Belt in the Art form Jeff Speakman's Kenpo 5.0 at age of 12.

In 2015, she first competed on the world stage at the World Cup Championships for Kenpo in Las Vegas. In 2016 Symonn competed at the Oceania Championships in Sydney placing 1st for her Form (Kata) in the Brown - Black Belt Division. She returned to Las Vegas in 2018 and placed 3rd in Self Defence and Sparring as a Black Belt.

At both the 2016 Oceania Championships and 2018 World Cup Championships, Symonn competed with a Patu carved by her grandfather in her Form (Kata). This created huge attention and interest in the Māori culture at both international tournaments.

With Karate now included in the Olympic Games, Symonn’s next goal is to compete on an Olympic stage. To achieve this, Symonn is working towards a Black Belt in the traditional karate art form of Shotokan Karate.

Congratulations to Parris Mason who has been selected for the 2020 Central Manawa Beko Netball squad to compete in the Beko Netball League. Parris has also been signed as a contracted training partner for Te Wanangā o Raukawa Pulse since the start of the season. Currently, Parris travels between MANUKURA and training in Wellington each week. The exposure she receives in the PULSE environment, has helped develop her on court game and her off-court habits.

“I am thankful to be given this opportunity. I have realised how hard they work to be the best and the level of leadership that is required to be playing at that level. I want to continue to grow as much as I can and get amongst the experience for as long as I can. When I play with them, it challenges me to lift my game and perform at a new level consistently."

This camp provides a unique coaching environment for up and coming players and coaches with the potential to reach the Youth & Opens team framework.
