Waka Ama

MANUKURA Waka Ama

"Teamwork makes the dream work."

At MANUKURA we endeavour to continue to develop Waka Ama. Our goal for 2020 is to develop new paddlers in preparation for NZSS in April of 2021 and also provide pathways for paddlers into Clubs so they can compete at the (the) Club Sprint Championships at Karapiro in January 2021. Due to the Covid 19 outbreak our teams were unable to compete at the the 2020 NZSS Waka Ama Sprint Nationals and improve on our placing of 7th Nationally, achieved by the J16 Boys team in 2019 who were all eligible to race this year. This was disappointing for all including Hunter Hewson who had already won gold at the the 2020 Waka Ama Club sprint Champs held in Karapiro, and also placed first in the Aito which is a great achievement.

2020 Hoetonga Regionals

A J16 boys team and a J19 Girls team competed at the Hoetonga regionals in Porirua midway through term 1. The girls team placed 2nd in the finals which was disappointing because they dominated all teams in the semis. The boys team was without 3 of the world paddlers and were up against the Porirua team ranked third Nationally. They were able to close the gaps between the Porirua team placing 2nd behind them which was promising leading into the Nationals. Thank you to all our volunteers and supporters for your special contributions to MANUKURA Waka Ama in 2019 and term 1 of 2020. Thank you to Seletar Filo for coaching and Kura Ratana for being the manager.
